Service is all I know it is all that as a family we have been exposed to, so to have three out of four of us in public service is no great surprise. But public service has its price, it can be very hurtful - it involves a lot of sacrifice, a lot of patience, tolerance. That is our inheritance - our inheritance has been invested in the people and that is also what I am trying to teach my own children and what is guiding me in my own life.

Young Nigerians Talk Positive at UN!!! called from THISDAY NEWSPAPER

Monday, September 28, 2009

Recently, youth leaders from around the world gathered at the United Nations headquarters in New York for the annual Youth Assembly. Nigerian youths were not left out, writes PAUL OHIA

United Nations annual Youth Assembly is a gathering of hundreds of young people from around the world who seek practical ways to contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, global networking and social entrepreneurship skills. Also, it serves as a meeting aimed at contributing to civil societies formally affiliated to the United Nations. In essence, the Youth Assembly is about showing how one person or a group of young people can make a difference by engaging with the challenges of the present and being an educated and active citizen.

This year, the forum was held between July 31 and August 7. With the presence of notable keynote speakers and workshop leaders invited by the United Nations, they provided insight and avenues for youths to learn about and become involved with programmes that address global and local social issues, network among a large international group in attendance, and become engaged and empowered to take up leadership responsibilities in their communities. The conference rooms were made more colourful given the cultural diversity of attendees drawn from countries like China, Japan, Sudan, Cameroon, Bangladesh, India and Nigeria, to mention a few. Among the Nigerian delegates was a group called Positive Nigeria International (PNI), a youth-based NGO, with the aim of unifying Nigerian youths to achieve a better future.

The team was made up of Iyere Ahamioje (founder), Nneamaka Madumelu from Canada and Ms Jeni Jenebu Abu from Atlanta, USA. “The organisation also seeks practical ways of dealing with Nigerian youths who are made element of political election violence, crimes, and corruption. The organisation also seeks practical ways of dealing with Nigerian youths who are continually made elements of political disruptions, thuggery, electoral violence, crime, and instruments of social malfeasance.” One of the members, Nneamaka Madumelu told THISDAY. “Whilst the situation of youths have become a global issue, the situation in Africa, characterised by an embarrassing high level of unemployment and underemployment, illegal migration to other continents, involvement in violent political and social conflicts, etc, is critical and requires strategic regional and national action. In Nigeria today, youths are not typically conceived as productive and constructive social actors but rather, as potential sources of political disruptions, delinquency and criminality. “Yet, pre-independence social and political movements were often led by young people who defined themselves as the ‘youth’ to provide dynamic support to the proponents of freedom and independence movement, or were in opposition of elders who were content to be cronies of the colonial regime she added. Madumelu also talked of the lessons they learnt from the conference.

“PNI realized that Nigeria and Africa needs re-orientation as a matter of urgency. The ideology of amassing wealth through looting of public funds and other vices must be seen as an evil of the past. We must become content as long as we have shelter, clothing, education, food and healthcare. We need a new breed of Africans with this sort of orientation, in view of the fact that the greatest problem in Africa has never been the absence of money or lack of natural resources but rather the absence of visionary and capable leadership.” She had some good words for some Nigerian leaders, though. “We have to commend the governor of Lagos State Mr. Babatunde Fashola for his exceptional work and also the former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke for the work he did as well.

We enjoin other leaders in federal, state and local levels to emulate them.” Madumelu added that ways of achieving development is for the government to look into the issue of youth unemployment in the country. This, according to her has become imperative because human capital development is an important aspect of livelihood. She continued: “Creating the enabling environment in which young people can leverage on to optimally develop their potential is essential. This can be done by building human capabilities through constructive pastimes like sporting activities, good educational facilities, and skills acquisition centers which in the long run can serve as means of livelihood for young people, thereby solving the problem of unemployment in the country.

Our leaders should be aware that the strength of a nation is measured by love, compassion and provision of necessary amenities for its citizens and not by GDP, population and/or natural resources.” Nneamaka advised Nigerian youths to develop the attitude of thinking in the direction of how they can help with the development of the country rather than what they cannot achieve. “This is because as youths, we have it in our power to start a new country and be the elements of change that we want to see in Nigeria today.

In order to do so, we need to start organising and stop agonizing.” Nneamaka also believes that she has the vision, passion and ability to make a great impact in Nigeria especially in the education and social development sectors which she personally believes are vital for nation building. She plans to return to Nigeria next year to actualise this change and is willing to work with any international development organisation, NGO, corporate and social re-engineering establishments, involved in community development activities where they operate. “It is time for all companies operating in Nigeria whether multinational or Nigerian, to become socially responsible towards the youths. She commended Prof. Dora Akunyili for her work at NAFDAC and efforts in the re-branding project. “It is a project I will like to be involved with,” she said, stressing that the future of the country lies in the hands of youths.

The fight against corruption has been the slow and most......

PREVENTIVE PRE-CONDITIONS FOR FIGHTING CORRUPTION

The fight against corruption has been the slow and most of the main actors in the crusade seem to be hesitant in bringing culprits to book, most especially the anti-graft agencies. Though some of our laws are largely responsible for this, for example the controversial S.308 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has remained an albatross in the fight. As for me advocating for the review of our laws should not be an end in itself but a process towards a better enforcement of our laws.

Basically certain essential conditions are necessary for this fight, which is:

Sound law enforcement

Genuine commitment from leaders

Thorough Investigative Approach

Protection of whistle blowers

Establishing Transparency Units in all Government agencies

Increase access to Information: Passing of the FOI Bill

Strengthening relationships with competent stakeholders in the fight

To members of POSITIVE NIGERIA INC.
It was a bright and sunny pleasant morning …

Sunday, January 25, 2009
It was a bright and sunny pleasant morning, and today makes it 2 weeks and some days that I woke up very strong, with that vigor I said to myself I was going to achieve a lot today. I had my shower very early to run some kind of errand for my mum hoping to end up at Femi Walsh’s house. The day before, we spoke and he sounded nice but like a real busy CEO always on the move, we agreed to meet for 2pm the next day. I can remember getting to Femi’s house around some minutes past 2pm because the first thing I did after I shook hands with him was to look at the beautiful wall clock which indicated I was a bit late but still on course.

Energetic, smart talking and confident guy, I got a clue about that because he wasted no time to kick start the conversation and further introduced his wife and his baby son fondly called ‘Bishop’
He spoke passionately and sure about his vision, and how he was doing his thing, so he asked me, what Positive Nigeria was all about. Not nervous but trying to be precise I gave a background of the reality on ground, “Positive Nigeria” though a new baby yet eager to walk and talk. He seemed impressed with the youthful passion about fighting corruption but he was already operating from a slightly different viewpoint.

From an hour conversation I discovered TRACA was becoming a global brand and partnership with TRACA would help PN grow faster than expected. After a while I did a quick review of what I wanted out of life. This was the big question that raced through my mind as I saw Femi Walsh as someone who had taken bold steps in the past.

Do we have our minds made up? How positive are we about POSITIVE NIGERIA and our country NIGERIA. We could dream dreams but not until we Move, Motivate and Mobilize all necessary resources needed to achieve this dream otherwise we would never reach the promise land. Sure D’banj had dreamt about being an Entertainer, Obama about strategizing his way to the white house, Fashola about turning Lagos City to Lagos Mega City, Mandela about South Africa’s freedom, this list is endless.

What Exactly is that Dream you had? What Exactly have you done towards achieving it? Have you paid the price yet?

Building a focused, long lasting, goal oriented and trustworthy relationship that would withstand any form of challenge is very important, Networking is key here and Mobilizing our resources would yield great benefits, We have the potentials I therefore put it to myself and the PN team that there is an urgent need for partnership, considering the huge benefits of synergy between the likes of Jim Ovia/Zenith, Femi Otedola/Zenon Oil, Aliko Dangote/Dangote Group of Companies, Cecelia Ibru/Oceanic, Mike Adenuga/Glo. These people never walk alone, its all about networking and partnership. Group launches anti-corruption campaign

Thursday, January 08, 2009
By Oyenike Oladipo
As part of the ongoing crusade to battle corruption, a youth organisation, Positive Nigeria, has initiated the ‘Operation Catch Them Young’ project, a crusade to crisscross secondary schools across the nation preaching the gospel of anti-corruption.
The initiative, among other things, is aimed at preventing corrupt practices through positive lifestyle advocacy campaigns, visits to heads of institutions, empowerment through skills acquisition programmes, reducing corrupt practices among the youth through peer group clubs and spreading information through creation of youth centres.
In a release signed by the Secretary, Oluwawumi Akanmode, the initiative, to be carried out in phases, will focus on sensitising, educating, empowering and creating awareness among the youth on anti-corruption practices and its reward.
Said the release: "Issues surrounding corruption are very sensitive, therefore we recognise the need to empower our youths with every information needed to pursue this cause, given that corrupt practices are perceived to be tolerable owing to the degree of impunity ongoing in the system, which has generated a false impression generally. Amidst this negative picture, so many youths are increasingly engaged in the labour market sustaining adding value to present nation building process.
The release further said the initiative is expected to build integrity system that would intensify awareness, prevent corrupt practices as well as advocate creation of positive peer pressure and installing a system which encourages honest practices among youths in Nigeria.
The group, founded by Iyere Ernest Ahamioje, who studies in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America, recently visited the office of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to introduce their programme.

Don’t get me wrong my friends , I will never lose focus on this great threat that is a continuous burden to my nation, rather I will continue to Fight the Fight and campaign against corruption and ensure that the future generation yet to come will be a virgin , know no corruption . Aminu told me to stop talking and let’s do the walking for a stable nation, but I told him. ‘We have to talk the talk before we walk the walk’… I therefore implore every meaningful young Adult where ever you may be. In the North , In The South , East or West to come together , Be focused, Be strong , Be Able and SAY NO TO CORRUPTION, Remember , Your NO counts and it’s a basic and necessary tool to fight corruption in Nigeria. Learn to not give and refrain from taking …I believe in a New Nigeria.
ON THE ECONOMY

The Economy, a major and essential part of the Nigerian nationalistic culture, but with the recent decline in the cost of crude oil, which have immensely affected the nations economy is surely something perplexing. What are we going to expect in 2025? When we hope to be among the worlds largest economy .Nigerians over dependence on oil has to stop. Oil will surely run out someday, rigs will go dry just like how the wells dry up. What happens if the Nigerian government wakes up tomorrow to find out that the oil wells/rigs in the Niger /Delta are no more ?Do we have a plan B , Is Nigeria ready for this Shock when it comes? , how can we tackle this issue? Is the Agricultural, tourism, transportation and industrial sector capable of replacing Crude Oil? Lets talk about Improving in other aspects and focus on those areas of concentration , Lets not dream big by talking about nuclear Plants when we don’t even have constant electricity to facilitate this lofty future project , I just believe that’s a Nuclear Nigeria is our passport to death in Nigeria .Oil ,Oil ,Oil , Na Oil we Go chop? What has it caused us in Nigeria? If you don’t know let me tell you my friends , it has caused the death of several innocent Nigerian’s , foreigners and the host of others even greedy leaders that have benefited from loots of this Black oil.
NIGER/DELTA.

I strongly believe that Land is ordained by the most high in whom you believe, The Gregarious Populates in these habitation posses an advantageous capability to the surface in which they reside .We should regard such immunity vested on them as a primus inter per and dislodge all barbaric and unaccommodating captivity on visitation primus that assist in disembarking on a long term progression of the creek region and the nation as a whole. All acts of malicious secuestrar should be altered by the junta.
On the Inter /Ethnic/ religious conflict.

I strongly believe and passionately see Nigerians as one. I don’t believe in a Hausa Nigeria or Yoruba Nigeria or Igbo Nigeria, I believe in the Federal republic of Nigeria , We are all one Under God , Indivisible ,uncompromising and loyal people , we are bond by unity and we should all respect each other irrespective of culture , religion and belief . I say it today, tomorrow and in time to come, ‘Let Peace Reign In Nigeria … God Bless The Federal republic of Nigeria and bless you all. EFCC writes Parties on 130 Corrupt Candidates

Tuesday, February 06, 2007

Indications emerged last night that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has written to political parties identifying no fewer than 130 candidates considered unfit to hold public offices over alleged corrupt practices.

A breakdown of the candidates from each party, according to THISDAY checks, reveal that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has the names of 52 of its candidates All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) 35 the Action Congress (AC) 28 the Peoples Progressive Alliance (PPA) 10 Democratic Peoples Party (DPP) 4 while the Alliance for Democracy (AD) has one of its candidates recommended as unfit for public office. The commission’s action, according to informed sources last night, is “advisory” and meant to “assist the parties come to terms with fielding credible candidates that are electable.”

According to an EFCC source, “the commission has made the information on the candidates available from its financial and economic crimes database. These are advisory notes and parties have no obligation to use them but hopefully, the commission feels they will be wise enough to do so.
“What we have done is just to help the parties in the process of arriving at their candidates before their disqualification which would not come from us,” the EFCC source said further. Noting that the commission was empowered to provide information on economic and financial crimes, the source argued that the action of the agency in providing information on the candidates falls within the purview of its responsibilities.

“The process was generated and developed from our database. EFCC is not a screening agency but it has informed the parties on the credibility of the candidates it has presented for election. If they choose, the parties can still replace them before it is too late,” the source added.
Meanwhile, the EFCC yesterday launched an investigation into the 11-month administration of the Oyo State deputy governor, Otunba Adebayo Akala as the agency nabbed and whisked away to Lagos, the state Accountant General, Mrs. Okeniyi.

Others in the EFCC net as of press time are the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Works, Engineer J.A. Laniyan and Director Project Monitoring, Engineer Adisa. THISDAY checks revealed that officials from the anti-corruption arrived the state capital at the weekend and have engaged the three officials, whose books were scrutinized, following which they were invited to Lagos for further inquiries.

According to the sources, the EFCC officials first came to the state last Friday and demanded for some documents relating to the award of various contracts and direct labour jobs executed by Akala while he held the forte as governor of the state.

Akala, through his media chief, Dotun Oyelade at the weekend, claimed that within eleven months of his administration, he was able to rehabilitate about 700 Kilometres of roads across the state. Ladoja at a personality interview on the state owned radio and television stations on Saturday tagged "Saturday Special", however faulted the claims of Akala on road rehabilitation, pointing out that most of the roads embarked by the defunct stop-gap administration were never concluded owing to discrepancies in contractual agreement.

The governor also pointed to the ancient Mapo Hall which the Akala administration is claiming credit for clarifying that the project was embarked upon without due consultations with accredited stakeholders and submitted that the money expended was a colossal waste.
Aside from the issue of contracts and direct labour jobs, the defunct regime is also being assailed by two citizens of the state who have petitioned another anti-graft body, the Independent and Corrupt Practises Commission (ICPC) to look into a N1.3billion textbooks scam.

The scandal, according to Mr Kunle Jimoh, and a social crusader, Julius Funso Dada, pertained to the inflation of the cost of 1.8 million primary school textbooks in Mathematics, English and Science. Although the state Commissioner for Finance, Mr Waheed Akanbi, denied any knowledge of such development, saying he has not been informed officially, sources at the Accountant-General office confirmed the development.

The principal complaint of the petitioners is that while Alao-Akala was the occupant of the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, he allegedly inflated the prices of textbooks purchased for primary school students by as much as 100 per cent of the market value. The two petitioners arrived at the alleged conclusion after they compared the prices, which the state government bought books to the actual market prices at a bookshop in Beere, Ibadan .

THISDAY checks informed that the commission having received the petition may storm the state this week to begin another round of investigation into the petition.
